Study Skills Strategies
STUDY YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Psychologists tell us that most people do not develop more than 10% of their potential for learning and self-development. Doubtless many persons never learn the secrets of successful study.
ANYONE CAN BE A BETTER STUDENT, IF HE OR SHE REALLY TRIES. One can realize the satisfactions and rewards of success in school. These satisfactions as well as the rewards which accompany them can be yours throughout life.
These tips may help:
1. Remember that self-discipline is an important key.
2. Do your studying now. Procrastination will lead to failure.
3. Ask your teachers for help. Teachers want to help and like for students to ask questions.
4. Sometimes your parents or a friend can help. Ask them to help you with vocabulary words and test review after you have studied.
5. Strive to develop a love of learning. The person who loves to learn always moves ahead.
6. Set standards for performance in terms of yourself rather than by what others can do.
7. Strive for a balanced schedule of study, rest, and recreation.

NOTE-TAKING
Note-taking is an important key to success in studying and learning
ALWAYS TAKE NOTES WHEN...
The teacher is giving a lecture. Note-taking helps you pay attention and keep alert.
You are reading from a class assignment. Note-taking helps increase your retention of information.
ADVANTAGES TO NOTE-TAKING....
Notes are your personal diary of what you want to know
Notes help keep you awake in class
Notes bring to bear 2 senses in the learning process--Seeing AND Hearing
Notes are an AID to recall when you want to review
HOW TO TAKE NOTES:
READ (or listen) with a PURPOSE for plot, ideas, facts, and what it is that you want to know
Make an OUTLINE for review purposes--cover all of the essential points so you can get them "at a glance"
Make sure you understand the WORDS--if not, look them up in a dictionary
SUMMARIZE the main points--the answers to the "so what" THINK--does it make sense
and also understand "WHY"--the relationship of the ideas and facts
Finally--if possible try to EXPLAIN to someone else--if it is not possible try explaining the subject to yourself.
TEST TAKING SKILLS
BEFORE THE TEST....
-Consider it a contest with you vs. the test maker
-Try to guess the questions. Can you answer them?
- Review your notes
-Look up points not clear
DURING THE TEST...
-Relax and forget other people
-Read directions carefully
-Look over the whole test first to budget you time and to avoid duplication
-Read each question twice before answering
-Cover all points asked for--not the points not asked
-Think before you write
-Leave time to check your paper before you turn it in for spelling and grammatical errors
Did you answer each question fully?
Did you follow directions?
AFTER THE TEST...
-When the test is returned, read the teacher's comments carefully so you understand any mistakes you made and won't repeat them.
STUDYING FOR EXAMS
1. Arrange your study schedule so that cramming will not be necessary.
2. Take a calm view of what you need to study. Do not waste time going over material you already know.
3. Plan for your final intensive reviewing in the weeks prior to test week and relax the night before.
4. If you study the night before an exam, go to sleep immediately afterward.
5. Develop speed in answering questions.
6. If you do not know the format of the exam, prepare for it as if it were an essay exam.
7. Do something besides reviewing during exam week.
8. Keep yourself in good physical and mental condition during exam week.
9. Arrive for the test on time, making sure you have adequate materials to take the test.
10. Approach the test methodically:
a) read and follow all directions carefully
b) look through the entire exam, noting parts that seem difficult
c) do essay portions first, as well as the parts that count the most, unless you are instructed to answer the questions in order.
d) before you answer a question, read it again to make sure you know its meaning and implications.
e) reject the temptations to guess the answer unless you have an honest basis for believing it to be correct.
f) whenever you can do so quickly, associate questions with each other and with as many important ideas as you can develop.
g) write legibly; waste no time; waste no words
11. Reread your paper before you hand it in, making corrections, additions, and any changes you find necessary.
12. Remember--it is not what you know that earns your grade--it is what you let the instructor know that you know.
